Challenge
Working with The Twins FX for Back to the Future: The Musical, the production required a highly realistic, mechanically controlled DeLorean capable of safely carrying live performers during key scenes. The system needed to look authentic, move convincingly, and integrate seamlessly into a demanding live theatre environment.
The design had to be capable of safely carrying live performers, and move convincingly within a live theatre environment, delivering smooth, controlled yaw, pitch, and roll motion. It also had to achieve full rotational movement within strict weight and spatial limits, faithfully recreate the DeLorean’s iconic form, and be transportable and able to be assembled through backstage routes not designed for equipment of this scale. Above all, it had to be safe, spectacular, and dependable for every performance.

How Amtek Tackled It
The project began with a full survey of the theatre’s backstage and stage geometry to define real-world constraints. These shaped the internal structure, motion envelope and mass budget. Amtek engineered a robust framework that carefully balanced stiffness, strength and weight to maintain the DeLorean’s recognisable shape while supporting performers and motion systems. Iterative testing ensured predictable behaviour under load and full compliance with safety requirements.
Achieving smooth, controlled multi-axis movement with live performers was a major challenge. By refining the centre of mass, strengthening rotational mechanisms and fine-tuning motion-control logic, the team delivered full 360-degree rotation with smooth pitch and roll, creating cinematic, operator-controlled motion that was fully repeatable.
Backstage access was extremely restricted, so the DeLorean was designed as a modular system, with sections sized for tight corridors, doorways and load-in routes. Each module featured reinforced interfaces for rapid assembly and easier inspection, maintenance and handling throughout the show.
While Amtek focused on structure and motion, the customer, The Twins FX, added fine artistic details to keep the vehicle true to the original. Many of these touches are subtle enough that audiences barely notice them, yet these unseen layers contribute to the overall magic, showcasing seamless collaboration between engineering precision and craftsmanship.
The Solution and Its Impact
Amtek delivered a highly convincing, fully motion-controlled DeLorean that became a centrepiece of the production.
